Far too many decorative and retaining walls shift or fail entirely within the first year!
There are two distinct types of walls, retaining and decorative walls. Decorative walls can be made of an assortment of material and laid directly on properly compacted soil. They should generally be no more than two feet. These walls are more for show and are not very structural. A retaining wall is a whole different matter. Anyone can stack blocks or stone, but it takes skill and the proper equipment to do a job that is going to stand the test of time. If you are considering having a block retaining wall built (dry-stack stone is not a retaining wall), ask the companies bidding if they have any certification, and through what company. My foreman and I each have our level one certification for design and construction of segmental retaining walls. This certification was gained through a series of classes at Reading Rock, the major manufacturer of segmental retaining block (Allan Block) in the Cincinnati area. Please visit our Gallery for pictures of both decorative and retaining walls.
Visit Reading Rocks website to view all of the latest styles and colors of segmental wall block, and pavers.
